No sunlight? No problem. Discover 8 indoor plants that grow well under artificial light and learn how to keep them healthy, even in windowless rooms or low-light spaces.
If your room doesn't get any sunlight, you’re not alone. Many homes have corners where natural light barely reaches.
The good news? You can still grow healthy indoor plants using nothing but artificial light. All you need are the right plants and the right expectations.

I’ve personally grown some of these plants under LED lights in a windowless room, and I was amazed by how well they adapted.
Let’s take a look at the best options.
1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
The Snake Plant is one of the hardiest indoor plants you can grow.
It doesn't rely heavily on sunlight and adapts easily to artificial lighting, such as LED or fluorescent bulbs.
In my experience, this plant grows a bit more slowly under artificial light, but it remains healthy and stable for years.
Just be sure to avoid overwatering it. That is where most people go wrong.
2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ Plant was practically made for low-light environments.
It stores water in its roots, so it doesn't require frequent care. Even under artificial light, it retains its deep green luster and upright growth habit.
I once kept a ZZ Plant in a windowless room for months. It didn't grow rapidly, but it didn't suffer any ill effects either.
Keep one thing in mind: don't expect it to grow very quickly. Its growth rate is naturally slow.
3. Pothos (Money Plant)
The Pothos is an incredibly resilient plant. It can thrive in almost any indoor environment.
Even under artificial light, it continues to send out long trailing vines, though its leaves may be slightly smaller in size.
If you’re looking for a trailing plant to adorn your shelves or walls, this is the perfect choice. Initially, I made a mistake—I placed it too far away from the light source.
For best results, keep it within 1–2 feet of the light source.
4. Peace Lily
The Peace Lily is known for its ability to survive even in low-light conditions, but it also adapts exceptionally well to artificial lighting.
If the lighting is sufficiently bright, it can even bloom indoors.
When it requires watering, you will notice its leaves beginning to droop. For this reason, it is a very easy plant for beginners to care for.
However, if the artificial lighting is weak, the number of flowers it produces may decrease. This is a normal occurrence.
5. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)
This plant is one of the best choices for low-light indoor spaces.
Its leaves feature beautiful patterns, and it continues to grow steadily even under artificial lighting.
In my setup, it remained lush and green even when illuminated by nothing more than a standard LED bulb.
Simply wipe down its leaves occasionally; dust accumulation prevents light from reaching the foliage.
6. Philodendron
Philodendron plants are very easy to grow and adapt quickly to new environments.
They thrive under artificial lighting—particularly the 'Heartleaf' variety (characterized by its heart-shaped leaves).
Due to their trailing growth habit, they are excellent candidates for hanging planters or for placement on the corners of desks.
One thing I’ve observed is that if the lighting is too dim, their stems tend to stretch out and elongate. This phenomenon is known as leggy growth.
Therefore, ensure the lighting remains consistent.
7. Dracaena
Dracaena plants are frequently found in office settings, and for good reason.
They tolerate artificial lighting exceptionally well and require very little maintenance. They grow straight upwards, giving your space a neat and organized look.
Just be a little careful when it comes to watering. Once, I overwatered my plant, and its leaves quickly started turning yellow.
8. Lucky Bamboo
Lucky Bamboo isn't actually bamboo, but it is perfect for low-light indoor spaces.
It can even grow in water and thrives easily under artificial lighting.
For this reason, it makes an excellent choice for desks, shelves, or even bathrooms.
One genuine drawback is that it grows very slowly. You won't see any significant changes in it anytime soon.
How to Use Artificial Lighting Effectively
Choosing the right plant is only half the battle. How you utilize artificial lighting matters just as much.
Keep these simple points in mind:
• Use LED grow lights or bright white LED lights.
• Keep the lights switched on for 10–14 hours daily.
• Place the plants as close as possible to the light source.
• Maintain consistency (plants prefer a consistent routine).
If a plant appears yellow or looks stretched out, it indicates that it is not receiving enough light.
Final Thoughts
Growing plants without sunlight might seem difficult, but in reality, it is a very simple task.
You simply need to select plants that are naturally resilient enough to withstand challenging conditions, and provide them with a consistent supply of artificial light.
In my experience, the biggest mistake is expecting the plants to grow very rapidly. These plants do survive and remain healthy but they grow at their own pace.
Start with one or two plants from this list. Once you observe how they respond, you will feel far more confident.
